Side Effects of Carafate
There are a number of side effects with Carafate that you should report to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
- Signs or symptoms of aluminum toxicity, such as:
- Weak bones
- Muscle and bone pain
- Confusion or other mental changes
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including:
- Unexplained skin rashes
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Unexplained swelling
- Difficulty swallowing.
Aluminum toxicity is most likely to occur with long-term use of Carafate in individuals with chronic kidney failure or those who are receiving dialysis treatments.
You may experience some or none of the Carafate side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to Carafate, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
