Carafate Drug Interactions

Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics
Carafate may bind to fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the digestive tract, decreasing their absorption into the bloodstream (perhaps making them less effective). Make sure to take the fluoroquinolone at least two hours before (or, in the case of ciprofloxacin, at least four hours before) or at least six hours after taking Carafate.

Levothyroxine
There is conflicting data about whether Carafate interacts with levothyroxine in any significant way. There is concern that Carafate may decrease the absorption of levothyroxine, but it is unclear if this is a true problem. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these two medications together.

Phenytoin
Carafate may bind to phenytoin in the digestive tract, decreasing its absorption into the bloodstream (perhaps making it less effective). Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

Phosphate Supplements
Carafate may decrease the absorption of phosphate supplements, so make sure to take your phosphate supplement at least one hour before or two hours after your Carafate dose.

Quinidine
Carafate may bind to quinidine in the digestive tract, decreasing its absorption into the bloodstream (perhaps making it less effective). Make sure to take quinidine at least two hours before or at least six hours after taking Carafate.

Ranitidine
Carafate may bind to ranitidine in the digestive tract, decreasing its absorption into the bloodstream (perhaps making it less effective). Separating Carafate and ranitidine by at least two hours helps to minimize this interaction.

Tetracyclines
Carafate may bind to tetracyclines in the digestive tract, decreasing their absorption into the bloodstream (perhaps making them less effective). Minimize this interaction by taking tetracycline at least two hours before your dose of Carafate.
